Effects of blood biochemical indexes on retinal vessel diameter variation in diabetic patients

Abstract: Objective To determine whether changes of retinal vascular diameter are associated with blood biochemical indexes in type 2 diabetes. Design Retrospective case series. Participants 72 diabetes patient who do not have hypertension. Method Fundus photographs and blood biochemical examination were taken, the diameter of retinal arterioles and venules were measured between 1 DD and 1.5 DD ring. Main Outcome Measures Retinal arterial diameter, retinal venous diameter, blood biochemistry. Result The diameter of retinal arterioles are associated with blood urea(t=-4.994, P=0.000). The regression equation: retinal artery diameter =68.714-2.964×UREA. At the same times, the diameter of retinal venules are associated with glycosylated hemoglobin(t=2.537, P=0.014). The regression equation: retinal vein diameter =74.318+1.402×HbA1c. Conclusion In patients with type 2 diabetes, poor glycemic control, elevated hemoglobin, can cause retinal vein dilation. Changes in the retinal arteries suggest a possible deterioration in renal function. (Ophthalmol CHN, 2016, 25: 247-250)
